Today I share some somber news from my apiary. One of my bee colonies has fallen victim to the invasive Vespa Velutina, also known as the Asian hornet. This may very well be the first sighting of this aggressive predator in our area — a worrying development for beekeepers, biodiversity, and native ecosystems alike.

The Vespa Velutina, originally from Southeast Asia, has been spreading steadily across Europe in recent years. It’s notorious for hovering near beehives, picking off honey bees mid-air and decimating entire colonies in weeks. Its presence here could mark a turning point for local pollinators if early action isn’t taken.

I urge fellow beekeepers and nature enthusiasts in the region to stay alert. If you spot hornets with a dark brown body, yellow-tipped legs, and an orange face, report it immediately to your local environmental authority or use apps like iNaturalist or local wildlife monitoring services.

This encounter underscores just how important community awareness and vigilance are in slowing the spread of invasive species. Together, we can protect what’s left of our precious pollinators.

Fourth Swarm in One Week: Back Up in the Tree!

Unbelievably, this marks the fourth swarm I’ve caught within just one week. After the previous easy catch at arm’s reach, this one brought me back to reality — perched higher up in an old fruit tree.

It was a classic swarm situation: warm weather, active bees, and that unmistakable hum. I spotted the cluster shimmering up in the branches. With a ladder, patience, and steady hands, I managed to coax the bees down and into the box safely.

Each swarm teaches me something new — this one reminded me of the physical effort involved and the precision needed when working higher up. But the reward? Another healthy group of bees given a new home and a growing sense of accomplishment in this fascinating craft. Four swarms in one week — that’s a milestone I won’t soon forget!

Vierter Schwarm in einer Woche: Diesmal wieder höher im Obstbaum

Kaum zu glauben – der vierte Schwarm innerhalb einer einzigen Woche! Nach dem letzten, bequemen Fang in Arbeitshöhe ging es diesmal wieder nach oben: Der Schwarm hing hoch oben in einem alten Obstbaum.

Es war wieder so weit – das typische Summen, sonniges Wetter und lebhafte Bienen. Ich entdeckte den Schwarm in den oberen Ästen, wo er als leuchtendes Knäuel schimmerte. Mit der Leiter, viel Geduld und vorsichtiger Handarbeit konnte ich ihn sicher einfangen.

Jeder Schwarm bringt eine neue Erfahrung mit sich – dieser erinnerte mich daran, wie viel Geschick und körperlicher Einsatz manchmal nötig sind, besonders in der Höhe. Aber die Mühe hat sich gelohnt: wieder ein gesundes Volk gerettet und ein weiterer Schritt auf meinem Weg als Imker. Vier Schwärme in einer Woche – ein Highlight meiner bisherigen Imkerlaufbahn!

Quatrième essaim en une semaine : cette fois, plus haut dans le pommier

Incroyable mais vrai : voici mon quatrième essaim capturé en seulement une semaine ! Après le dernier, si pratique à portée de main, celui-ci m’a remis les pieds sur terre – ou plutôt, m’a fait grimper plus haut, dans un vieux pommier.

Les conditions étaient idéales : temps chaud, bourdonnement intense, activité autour de la ruche. L’essaim s’était formé dans les hauteurs de l’arbre, visible comme une grappe vivante suspendue dans les branches. Avec une échelle et beaucoup de calme, j’ai pu récupérer les abeilles en toute sécurité.

Chaque essaim est une nouvelle leçon. Celui-ci m’a rappelé que l’apiculture, c’est aussi de l’effort physique et de la précision, surtout en hauteur. Mais quel bonheur de redescendre avec un nouvel essaim en sécurité ! Quatre en une semaine – c’est un rythme intense, mais tellement gratifiant.

Just two days after my last swarm rescue, it happened again — another swarm, this time in the most beekeeper-friendly spot imaginable: right at a comfortable working height.

There was no climbing, no ladders, no straining to reach — just a calm, accessible swarm hanging conveniently on a branch within arm’s reach. For any beekeeper, that’s a rare treat. The bees were relaxed, and the whole process went smoothly from approach to relocation.

It’s fascinating how every swarm, no matter how similar on the surface, brings its own rhythm and small surprises. This one reminded me how nature sometimes offers a break and makes the work not only easier but thoroughly enjoyable. With three successful swarm captures in a row, my confidence is growing — and so is my love for this craft.

Dritter Schwarm: Zwei Tage später in perfekter Arbeitshöhe

Nur zwei Tage nach dem letzten Einsatz rief der nächste Schwarm – und diesmal war er besonders freundlich zu mir positioniert: in angenehmer Arbeitshöhe!

Kein Klettern, keine Leiter, kein Verrenkungen – der Schwarm hing griffbereit in einem Strauch und ließ sich ganz entspannt einfangen. Für uns Imker ist so ein Szenario ein echter Glücksfall. Die Bienen waren ruhig, und die ganze Aktion verlief wie im Bilderbuch.

Es ist spannend, wie jeder Schwarm seinen eigenen Charakter mitbringt. Dieser hier war ein Geschenk – eine kleine Erinnerung daran, dass die Natur manchmal gnädig ist und uns die Arbeit leicht macht. Drei erfolgreiche Schwärme in Folge – das baut Vertrauen auf und macht richtig Freude am Imkern.

Aucune échelle, aucun effort pour grimper – l’essaim était suspendu tranquillement à portée de main. Une véritable bénédiction dans notre métier ! Les abeilles étaient paisibles, et la capture s’est faite sans le moindre souci.

Chaque essaim a sa propre dynamique, et celui-ci m’a rappelé à quel point la nature peut parfois nous faciliter la tâche. Trois captures d’affilée, chacune différente – et toujours plus de passion pour l’apiculture qui grandit en moi.

Another Swarm Adventure: A Quick Rescue of a Small Offshoot

Just when I thought the excitement from my first swarm had settled, I received a call from a fellow beekeeper friend. She was at work but had noticed — via a neighbor — that one of her colonies at home was swarming. Without hesitation, I jumped into action.

I drove straight to her place, gear in the car and adrenaline kicking in. Sure enough, a small swarm had gathered not far from one of her hives. Judging by its size, it was likely a Nachschwarm — a secondary swarm that often leaves the hive with a virgin queen after the main swarm has gone.

The catch itself was smooth. The bees were calm, and everything went according to plan. Despite the smaller scale, it was another valuable and successful experience — each swarm teaching me something new, strengthening my instincts, and reminding me of the unpredictable beauty of beekeeping.

Wieder ein Schwarm: Kleiner Nachschwarm erfolgreich eingefangen

Kaum war die Aufregung um meinen ersten Schwarm vorbei, klingelte das Telefon. Eine befreundete Imkerin rief mich von der Arbeit aus an – bei ihr zuhause würde gerade ein Bienenvolk schwärmen. Ein Nachbar hatte sie informiert.

Ohne zu zögern sprang ich ins Auto und fuhr los. Vor Ort angekommen, sah ich gleich: Es handelte sich um einen kleinen Schwarm, wahrscheinlich ein Nachschwarm mit einer jungen Königin. Er hatte sich in der Nähe ihres Bienenstocks niedergelassen.

Mit etwas Ruhe und Routine konnte ich den Schwarm problemlos einfangen. Alles verlief reibungslos. Auch wenn es „nur“ ein kleiner Schwarm war, war es eine tolle Erfahrung – jede Aktion wie diese bringt neue Erkenntnisse, festigt das Wissen und macht Lust auf mehr.

Un petit essaim, une belle action : intervention chez une amie apicultrice

À peine avais-je digéré l’émotion de ma première capture d’essaim, qu’un autre événement se présentait. Une amie apicultrice m’a appelée depuis son lieu de travail : l’un de ses essaims était en train de quitter la ruche chez elle ! Alertée par un voisin, elle m’a demandé d’intervenir.

Je suis parti immédiatement. Une fois sur place, j’ai trouvé un petit essaim suspendu à proximité de sa ruche. À en juger par sa taille, il s’agissait probablement d’un essaim secondaire, un groupe qui part avec une reine vierge après l’essaim principal.

La capture s’est faite calmement et sans difficulté. Les abeilles étaient paisibles, et tout s’est déroulé parfaitement. Même si c’était un petit essaim, ce genre d’expérience est toujours enrichissante et renforce l’amour de l’apiculture – chaque intervention apporte son lot de leçons et de satisfaction.

Buzzing Success: My First Bee Swarm Catch (Possibly Two!)

On Monday, I experienced a milestone every beekeeper anticipates: I caught my very first bee swarm! Actually, it might have been two swarms merged into one, considering the sheer size and activity level of the buzzing cluster. The event was as thrilling as it was humbling.

With the right tools and a calm hand, I approached the swarm. The process was smoother than I expected, though the weight and volume of bees suggested I might be dealing with more than just a typical swarm. Once I got them into the box, I couldn’t help but feel a deep respect for these creatures and their incredible instinct to survive and thrive.

Back at the hive, the bees settled in quickly, showing signs of acceptance and normal behavior. Whether it was one super-swarm or two that joined forces, I’m incredibly proud of the successful catch — and even more excited about what this means for the future of my beekeeping journey.

SummSummSumm: Mein erster Bienenschwarm (oder waren es zwei?)

Am Montag war es endlich so weit – ich habe meinen allerersten Bienenschwarm eingefangen! Vielleicht waren es sogar zwei, so riesig war die Masse an Bienen, die sich in einem großen, summenden Knäuel versammelt hatte.

Mit der nötigen Ruhe, etwas Erfahrung und dem passenden Equipment konnte ich mich dem Schwarm nähern und ihn erfolgreich einfangen. Schon während der Aktion kam mir der Gedanke, dass es sich eventuell um zwei zusammengeschlossene Schwärme handelte – so viele Bienen hatte ich noch nie auf einmal gesehen.

Zurück im Bienenstock verlief alles ruhig. Die Bienen nahmen ihr neues Zuhause gut an, und die ersten Flugbewegungen machten Hoffnung auf eine starke, gesunde Kolonie. Ob ein Super-Schwarm oder zwei in einem – ich bin stolz auf diesen Meilenstein in meiner Imkerlaufbahn und freue mich auf alles, was noch kommt!

Un bourdonnement de réussite : ma première capture d’essaim (ou deux ?)

Lundi, j’ai franchi une étape marquante dans ma vie d’apiculteur : j’ai capturé mon tout premier essaim d’abeilles ! Et en fait, il se pourrait bien qu’il y en ait eu deux, vu l’ampleur impressionnante du regroupement.

Avec patience et les bons outils, je me suis approché et j’ai pu récupérer l’essaim sans difficulté majeure. Ce qui m’a surpris, c’est le poids et la densité – probablement deux essaims réunis, tellement il y avait de monde !

De retour à la ruche, les abeilles ont rapidement trouvé leurs marques, preuve que la capture s’était bien passée. Qu’il s’agisse d’un super-essaim ou d’une fusion de deux, je suis extrêmement fier de ce succès – et encore plus enthousiaste pour la suite de mon aventure apicole.

My First Clean Wax Blocks from Melted Frames!

On September 30th, I embarked on another exciting beekeeping milestone—melting down my first batch of wax from the frames using a steam wax melter. After the initial melting process, I decided to refine the wax further by re-melting it on the gas burner and allowing it to clarify over several days.

Today, I’m thrilled to share the result: two clean wax blocks, weighing around 1.1 kg in total! It’s amazing to see how something so raw and unrefined can be transformed into these beautiful, golden blocks of pure wax. The process was a bit labor-intensive, but totally worth it in the end.

These wax blocks will be perfect for making natural products like candles, lip balms, and maybe even beeswax wraps in the future. It’s another rewarding step on my beekeeping journey, and I’m excited to see what other projects this clean wax will inspire.

My First Harvest of Homemade Honey!

Today marked a truly special moment – I bottled honey for the first time, and what a sweet success it turned out to be! After carefully tending to my bees and giving them the time they needed to work their magic, I was finally able to reap the reward of their hard work.

The result? A total of 44 jars of pure, golden honey! There’s something incredibly rewarding about enjoying something so natural and unprocessed, knowing it came straight from the hive to the jar. It’s a feeling of connection with nature and the incredible teamwork of bees, who work tirelessly to produce such a precious treat.

Every jar holds the essence of the flowers my bees have visited, and I can’t wait to share this delicious, golden sweetness with friends and family.

For now, I’ll keep refining my beekeeping skills and look forward to future harvests. There’s always something new to learn in this fascinating world of beekeeping. Stay tuned for more honey adventures!

Today, I had my first “almost” solo visit to the bees. With guidance from a beekeeper friend, I successfully applied the medication to protect the hive from the dreaded Varroa mite. It was fascinating to experience working with the beehives up close. I even encountered an unexpected guest – a little mouse taking a nap near the beehive, which I kindly had to shoo away. An unforgettable day in nature and another step forward on my beekeeping journey.
