Another Swarm Adventure: A Quick Rescue of a Small Offshoot

Just when I thought the excitement from my first swarm had settled, I received a call from a fellow beekeeper friend. She was at work but had noticed — via a neighbor — that one of her colonies at home was swarming. Without hesitation, I jumped into action.

I drove straight to her place, gear in the car and adrenaline kicking in. Sure enough, a small swarm had gathered not far from one of her hives. Judging by its size, it was likely a Nachschwarm — a secondary swarm that often leaves the hive with a virgin queen after the main swarm has gone.

The catch itself was smooth. The bees were calm, and everything went according to plan. Despite the smaller scale, it was another valuable and successful experience — each swarm teaching me something new, strengthening my instincts, and reminding me of the unpredictable beauty of beekeeping.

Wieder ein Schwarm: Kleiner Nachschwarm erfolgreich eingefangen

Kaum war die Aufregung um meinen ersten Schwarm vorbei, klingelte das Telefon. Eine befreundete Imkerin rief mich von der Arbeit aus an – bei ihr zuhause würde gerade ein Bienenvolk schwärmen. Ein Nachbar hatte sie informiert.

Ohne zu zögern sprang ich ins Auto und fuhr los. Vor Ort angekommen, sah ich gleich: Es handelte sich um einen kleinen Schwarm, wahrscheinlich ein Nachschwarm mit einer jungen Königin. Er hatte sich in der Nähe ihres Bienenstocks niedergelassen.

Mit etwas Ruhe und Routine konnte ich den Schwarm problemlos einfangen. Alles verlief reibungslos. Auch wenn es „nur“ ein kleiner Schwarm war, war es eine tolle Erfahrung – jede Aktion wie diese bringt neue Erkenntnisse, festigt das Wissen und macht Lust auf mehr.

Un petit essaim, une belle action : intervention chez une amie apicultrice

À peine avais-je digéré l’émotion de ma première capture d’essaim, qu’un autre événement se présentait. Une amie apicultrice m’a appelée depuis son lieu de travail : l’un de ses essaims était en train de quitter la ruche chez elle ! Alertée par un voisin, elle m’a demandé d’intervenir.

Je suis parti immédiatement. Une fois sur place, j’ai trouvé un petit essaim suspendu à proximité de sa ruche. À en juger par sa taille, il s’agissait probablement d’un essaim secondaire, un groupe qui part avec une reine vierge après l’essaim principal.

La capture s’est faite calmement et sans difficulté. Les abeilles étaient paisibles, et tout s’est déroulé parfaitement. Même si c’était un petit essaim, ce genre d’expérience est toujours enrichissante et renforce l’amour de l’apiculture – chaque intervention apporte son lot de leçons et de satisfaction.

Buzzing Success: My First Bee Swarm Catch (Possibly Two!)

On Monday, I experienced a milestone every beekeeper anticipates: I caught my very first bee swarm! Actually, it might have been two swarms merged into one, considering the sheer size and activity level of the buzzing cluster. The event was as thrilling as it was humbling.

With the right tools and a calm hand, I approached the swarm. The process was smoother than I expected, though the weight and volume of bees suggested I might be dealing with more than just a typical swarm. Once I got them into the box, I couldn’t help but feel a deep respect for these creatures and their incredible instinct to survive and thrive.

Back at the hive, the bees settled in quickly, showing signs of acceptance and normal behavior. Whether it was one super-swarm or two that joined forces, I’m incredibly proud of the successful catch — and even more excited about what this means for the future of my beekeeping journey.

SummSummSumm: Mein erster Bienenschwarm (oder waren es zwei?)

Am Montag war es endlich so weit – ich habe meinen allerersten Bienenschwarm eingefangen! Vielleicht waren es sogar zwei, so riesig war die Masse an Bienen, die sich in einem großen, summenden Knäuel versammelt hatte.

Mit der nötigen Ruhe, etwas Erfahrung und dem passenden Equipment konnte ich mich dem Schwarm nähern und ihn erfolgreich einfangen. Schon während der Aktion kam mir der Gedanke, dass es sich eventuell um zwei zusammengeschlossene Schwärme handelte – so viele Bienen hatte ich noch nie auf einmal gesehen.

Zurück im Bienenstock verlief alles ruhig. Die Bienen nahmen ihr neues Zuhause gut an, und die ersten Flugbewegungen machten Hoffnung auf eine starke, gesunde Kolonie. Ob ein Super-Schwarm oder zwei in einem – ich bin stolz auf diesen Meilenstein in meiner Imkerlaufbahn und freue mich auf alles, was noch kommt!

Un bourdonnement de réussite : ma première capture d’essaim (ou deux ?)

Lundi, j’ai franchi une étape marquante dans ma vie d’apiculteur : j’ai capturé mon tout premier essaim d’abeilles ! Et en fait, il se pourrait bien qu’il y en ait eu deux, vu l’ampleur impressionnante du regroupement.

Avec patience et les bons outils, je me suis approché et j’ai pu récupérer l’essaim sans difficulté majeure. Ce qui m’a surpris, c’est le poids et la densité – probablement deux essaims réunis, tellement il y avait de monde !

De retour à la ruche, les abeilles ont rapidement trouvé leurs marques, preuve que la capture s’était bien passée. Qu’il s’agisse d’un super-essaim ou d’une fusion de deux, je suis extrêmement fier de ce succès – et encore plus enthousiaste pour la suite de mon aventure apicole.
