Buzzing Success: My First Bee Swarm Catch (Possibly Two!)

On Monday, I experienced a milestone every beekeeper anticipates: I caught my very first bee swarm! Actually, it might have been two swarms merged into one, considering the sheer size and activity level of the buzzing cluster. The event was as thrilling as it was humbling.

With the right tools and a calm hand, I approached the swarm. The process was smoother than I expected, though the weight and volume of bees suggested I might be dealing with more than just a typical swarm. Once I got them into the box, I couldn’t help but feel a deep respect for these creatures and their incredible instinct to survive and thrive.

Back at the hive, the bees settled in quickly, showing signs of acceptance and normal behavior. Whether it was one super-swarm or two that joined forces, I’m incredibly proud of the successful catch — and even more excited about what this means for the future of my beekeeping journey.

SummSummSumm: Mein erster Bienenschwarm (oder waren es zwei?)

Am Montag war es endlich so weit – ich habe meinen allerersten Bienenschwarm eingefangen! Vielleicht waren es sogar zwei, so riesig war die Masse an Bienen, die sich in einem großen, summenden Knäuel versammelt hatte.

Mit der nötigen Ruhe, etwas Erfahrung und dem passenden Equipment konnte ich mich dem Schwarm nähern und ihn erfolgreich einfangen. Schon während der Aktion kam mir der Gedanke, dass es sich eventuell um zwei zusammengeschlossene Schwärme handelte – so viele Bienen hatte ich noch nie auf einmal gesehen.

Zurück im Bienenstock verlief alles ruhig. Die Bienen nahmen ihr neues Zuhause gut an, und die ersten Flugbewegungen machten Hoffnung auf eine starke, gesunde Kolonie. Ob ein Super-Schwarm oder zwei in einem – ich bin stolz auf diesen Meilenstein in meiner Imkerlaufbahn und freue mich auf alles, was noch kommt!

Un bourdonnement de réussite : ma première capture d’essaim (ou deux ?)

Lundi, j’ai franchi une étape marquante dans ma vie d’apiculteur : j’ai capturé mon tout premier essaim d’abeilles ! Et en fait, il se pourrait bien qu’il y en ait eu deux, vu l’ampleur impressionnante du regroupement.

Avec patience et les bons outils, je me suis approché et j’ai pu récupérer l’essaim sans difficulté majeure. Ce qui m’a surpris, c’est le poids et la densité – probablement deux essaims réunis, tellement il y avait de monde !

De retour à la ruche, les abeilles ont rapidement trouvé leurs marques, preuve que la capture s’était bien passée. Qu’il s’agisse d’un super-essaim ou d’une fusion de deux, je suis extrêmement fier de ce succès – et encore plus enthousiaste pour la suite de mon aventure apicole.

Collecting honey samples

Collecting honey samples from your hives for testing is a crucial step in maintaining a healthy and thriving bee colony. Today, I teamed up with a fellow beekeeper friend to take honey ring samples from my three bee colonies. These samples will be sent to the bee institute for thorough analysis and disease testing. This process is not only essential for the health of the bees but also helps monitor and prevent the spread of diseases that could impact the entire apiary.

Routine testing and preventive measures like these are critical for ensuring that our bees stay healthy, especially given the rising threats they face. Knowing that my colonies will be analyzed provides peace of mind, as the results will offer valuable insights into their health status and guide any necessary actions to protect them.

Heute habe ich gemeinsam mit einem Imkerkollegen Futterkranzproben von meinen drei Bienenvölkern entnommen. Diese Proben werden zur Analyse und Untersuchung auf Krankheiten an das Bieneninstitut geschickt. Dieser Schritt ist entscheidend, um sicherzustellen, dass die Bienen gesund bleiben und sich Krankheiten nicht ausbreiten, die das gesamte Bienenvolk beeinträchtigen könnten.

Regelmäßige Tests und präventive Maßnahmen wie diese sind unerlässlich, um sicherzustellen, dass unsere Bienen angesichts der zunehmenden Bedrohungen gesund bleiben. Es ist beruhigend zu wissen, dass meine Völker analysiert werden, da die Ergebnisse wertvolle Einblicke in ihren Gesundheitszustand geben und mögliche Schutzmaßnahmen aufzeigen.

Indem wir eng mit Experten zusammenarbeiten und diese bewährten Methoden anwenden, tragen wir zu einer nachhaltigen Imkerei und dem langfristigen Wohl unserer Bestäuber bei.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai prélevé, avec un collègue apiculteur, des échantillons de couvain de mes trois ruches. Ces échantillons seront envoyés à l’institut apicole pour des analyses et des tests de maladies. Cette démarche est cruciale pour maintenir la santé des abeilles et éviter la propagation de maladies qui pourraient affecter l’ensemble de la colonie.

Les tests réguliers et les mesures préventives de ce type sont essentiels pour garantir la santé de nos abeilles, notamment face aux menaces croissantes auxquelles elles sont confrontées. Savoir que mes colonies seront analysées me rassure, car les résultats fourniront des informations précieuses sur leur état de santé et permettront de prendre les mesures nécessaires pour les protéger.

My First Clean Wax Blocks from Melted Frames!

On September 30th, I embarked on another exciting beekeeping milestone—melting down my first batch of wax from the frames using a steam wax melter. After the initial melting process, I decided to refine the wax further by re-melting it on the gas burner and allowing it to clarify over several days.

Today, I’m thrilled to share the result: two clean wax blocks, weighing around 1.1 kg in total! It’s amazing to see how something so raw and unrefined can be transformed into these beautiful, golden blocks of pure wax. The process was a bit labor-intensive, but totally worth it in the end.

These wax blocks will be perfect for making natural products like candles, lip balms, and maybe even beeswax wraps in the future. It’s another rewarding step on my beekeeping journey, and I’m excited to see what other projects this clean wax will inspire.

My First Harvest of Homemade Honey!

Today marked a truly special moment – I bottled honey for the first time, and what a sweet success it turned out to be! After carefully tending to my bees and giving them the time they needed to work their magic, I was finally able to reap the reward of their hard work.

The result? A total of 44 jars of pure, golden honey! There’s something incredibly rewarding about enjoying something so natural and unprocessed, knowing it came straight from the hive to the jar. It’s a feeling of connection with nature and the incredible teamwork of bees, who work tirelessly to produce such a precious treat.

Every jar holds the essence of the flowers my bees have visited, and I can’t wait to share this delicious, golden sweetness with friends and family.

For now, I’ll keep refining my beekeeping skills and look forward to future harvests. There’s always something new to learn in this fascinating world of beekeeping. Stay tuned for more honey adventures!
